The Symbolism of Sex in Horror Movies
One of the basic principles of horror is to take something that everyone is familiar with, and to exploit any worries about that idea, ideal, or action. There is a strong psychological reason behind the presence of sex in horror films.
Most people try to keep the scary aspects of sex in the back of their mind as much as possible. Most people try not to think of all of the dangers that could possibly happen during
sex.
In horror films, people take down any conscience guards that they may have to the dangers of sex. More often then not, it is teenagers that are disregarding the warnings that have been put on them by their parents about sex. This is when a killer will strike.
People are most vulnerable when they are having sex. Many times, hormones take complete control, and we set ourselves up for anything to happen.
In the case of horror films, the people that are having sex are oblivious to the world around them. This gives extra time for the killer or monster to sneak up on them and to kill them.
Sex, has become the most recognizable symbol in all of horror. Just like drug abuse, and alcohol abuse in horror films, sex in horror films has evolved into being a symbol of not paying attention to your parents.
Ever since the symbolism was pointed out in the movie, Scream, most people have come to realize that if someone has sex in a horror film, that person will die. Since sex is used for the creation of life, it is also used in horror films for the decimation of life.
Among the hidden dangers of sex, sexual diseases are also portrayed as a psychotic killer, or as a bloodthirsty monster. Instead of death coming slowly from the disease, death is quick, painful, and without a chance for escape.
While sex scenes have grown less graphic in most horror films over the years, the causes of death have grown more graphic. This symbolizes the increase of damage that sexual diseases that has happened over the last decade.
The number of sexual deaths in horror films has increased in number in many of the films over the last decade. This symbolizes the increase of the amount of people that have become infected by sexually transmitted diseases over the last ten years.
