As children, we were told to stop procrastinating and do our chores, homework, etc. And those orders follow us into adulthood, causing us to feel guilty for watching a favorite TV show instead of mowing the lawn, or checking blog stats when we really should be writing blog posts! But really, what is
so bad about procrastinating?

The fact of the matter is that we live in a go-go-go society where everyone is expected to be constantly running from one place to another, multi-tasking and working overtime. Our brains simply get tired out. The worst procrastination occurs when workers are overtired and overstressed, which might indicate something.

Could it be that avoiding work is our mind's way of telling us to slow down? Finding yourself vegging out in front of a stupid movie when you ought to be working on a last minute report is a good indication that you might need to stop cramming so much into your day. Saying no can be a good thing.

By procrastinating, we end up giving ourselves some breathing room and recovery time, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, it is important to note that instead of actually wasting time when you are on a deadline, it would be far better to schedule some free time into your days! This allows you to get your required work done (since losing your job could be the end of your procrastinating days) and still have some personal time.

If you find that you aren't particularly stressed out, but are avoiding a task anyway, it is worth taking a look at why. For example, if you have an article to write and just can't bring yourself to do it, you might be worried that you can't do it properly. A fear of failure can cause the paralyzation that so often leads to procrastinating. By facing that fear and looking for a solution (do some research to learn more about your article subject, for example), you should be able to get back to work.

I like the point that procrastination gives you breathing room. There's other benefits too -- I just wrote a short article giving some specifics (Barbie will be happy): http://blog.asmartbear.com/2008/10/procrastinate-for-success.html

I think it would benefit the article to put in an example of why procrastination is good instead of just saying it is good.
