Traditionally, at the rehearsal dinner after the wedding rehearsal the groom will give his groomsmen a token gift to thank them for being part of the wedding. The traditional choices are ones that quite often sit in a drawer collecting dust. Items such as a pocket watch aren't exactly items that will be commonly used after receiving them. Even a nice item that the groom obviously spent some money on is ignored rather quickly if it doesn't have a practical use. Here are some more modern ideas for gifts for your groomsmen instead of just blindly following traditions.

Traditionally a groomsman gift has something on it to indicate it was from the wedding. As mentioned above many of these traditional gifts end up in a drawer gathering dust, but they all don't have to end up that way. As a groom, think of if your groomsmen enjoy having a few drinks at home. If so there are items you can consider such as a beer mug (not a stein) that is engraved with their initials and the name of you and your bride with the wedding date. Another option is a set of shot glasses, these might not have their initials but could have the wedding date on them. Another option is a set of drinking glasses or maybe a pitcher that is engraved. These items are all much more likely to be used than the average engraved gifts.

Are the gentlemen that you have asked to be your groomsmen sports fans? If so, how about a ticket for all of them to attend a game with the groom sometime after the groom returns from his honeymoon? That way they can all enjoy a sporting event and laugh about the things that went on at the reception. Of course they can also get the dirt from the groom about the honeymoon as well.

These days many more guys are spending time outside over a grill. My brother for his wedding got all of us groomsmen nice sets of grill accessories from William Sonoma and we were all very happy with that as a gift option. Of course that also gives the new bride and groom an excuse to come over for a barbecue to see if you are using your new gift as well.

Takeaways
  • Don't buy the pocket watch or money clip, they sit around collecting dust.
  • Buy presents that are geared towards the type of groomsmen you have in your wedding.
  • Not every groomsman has to get the same exact gift.
Did You Know?
Many times the bride takes much more time and effort in choosing her gifts for her bridesmaids than the groom does in choosing gifts for the groomsmen. Put a little time into it and your groomsmen will be shocked and thrilled.
