Research shows that 25% of homeschooled 8th graders out perform the average public school student by four grade levels. Lawrence M. Rudner did the Rudner studies back in 1998 at the University of Maryland for the purpose of evaluation educational achievements of homeschooled students as compared to public school students. That was nine years ago, since that time there has been a steady increase of families who have chosen to teach their kids at home. There are many reasons why parents make the decision to homeschool. Whatever your reasons may be this article's intention is to help provide you with a blue print for getting started.

Do Your Homework

The first step to getting started is to research the subject of homeschooling. Spend time thinking about why you want to homeschool and if your willing to make the commitment, which it will require. Talk to other homeschooling families in your area or online. Discuss your views with your spouse and possibly other family members. If your children are old enough, ask them how they feel about receiving an education at home. There are many books on the market about homeschooling. However, before you decide to spend money on books you may want to surf the web. There are many wonderful websites often ran by homeschooling mothers themselves, which will give you an insiders look at homeschooling.

Know Your State Laws

While doing your research be sure to research your state's policy on homeschooling. Each state has it's own laws and requirements. It is essential that you know exactly what the regulations are to avoid getting into trouble. Each state is different but some of the requirements will include educational requirements the parent needs to have recordkeeping procedures, attendance policies, and student achievement testing and other requirements.
