What's with all of these portrayals of big men with skinny, model-looking women on TV, yet the opposite is never true?

You never see an overweight woman with a GQ-looking guy. No, producers couldn't do that, because they think nobody would believe it or want to see it.
But everywhere you look, especially on TV sitcoms, like 'The King of Queens' and 'According to Jim', you see some blue-collar slob with a hot, trophy wife.

And now Hollywood is getting in on the act. Most recently, the film 'The Holiday' is guilty of this double-standard stereotype.
In this romantic comedy, half-man, half-ogre Jack Black plays the love interest of the budding, young starlet, Kate Winslet.

Don't get me wrong, it's fun to root for the ugly guy that didn't stand a chance with the prom queen in high school. And for him to win her over, finally having his day in the sun is a victory for nerds everywhere.

However, the way Hollywood only shows one side of this social battle further enforces the negative standards that are put upon young girls everywhere.

"If you're not one of the beautiful people, you can't be sexy, thus you can't get the guy and can't be successful", says Hollywood executives.
This isn't reality, I see successful bigger women with smaller anorexic-type guys all the time.

So, where are teens to look for as far as women as role models in the media?
All of these stick figure actresses ascend every plateau of social status in movie and TV roles, they seem like positive influences. So say the big wig movie heads.

But, if they could only realize that if there were just a few TV and movie characters showing bigger women being successful and getting Hollywood's latest "hot" actor, maybe young girls wouldn't be so prone to eating disorders and diet fads.

Instead what you get are girls thinking, "Regardless of what my future husband looks like I have to have the dimensions of a Barbie Doll to keep up with the status quo".

Thankfully, shows like ABC's 'Ugly Betty' is making headway in teaching girls self-esteem lessons by showing the real-woman image in the real world.
