I have used digital cameras for many years now - mostly Canon's - a brand I have come to rely on and trust. Many things have changed since my first one, a Powershot A20. These early digital cameras, like that A20, were larger than the newer generation and the storage and power requirements added both weight and size to the cameras themselves. The A20, and several later versions I owned, used Compact Flash cards (about 1" square) for storage. Carrying less power by requiring only 2 vs. 4 AA batteries, the last couple of cameras have been considerably lighter - though, as I have pointed out in my review of the A570 IS, the reduction in battery power slows sown the recharging time for the flash by a few seconds. But this review is about the media itself, the memory card you put in the camera to hold the images you capture until you are ready to review, edit, print, save or dump them. That Compact Flash media is the larger of those still in common use and has been replaced in most Canon cameras, by the considerably smaller and more efficient Secure Digital (about the size of a small postage stamp) format. Most new Canon digital cameras come delivered with a functionally useless 16mb SD card - large enough only for a few high resolution photos - just enough to test the camera out of the box to make sure it works OK. So, the first task and purchase after getting a new camera is to get some adequate media storage for it.
