Flocking a Warhammer Miniature: Wargaming Tips and Tricks
Warhammer, the game of miniature battles, is one of the most popular miniature wargamers that is played in hobby stores all over the United States, the UK (Games-Workshop is a UK-based company) and throughout the world of wargaming. Painting the Warhammer miniatures, be they for Warhammer 40,000 or
Warhammer fantasy battles is a exciting and fun part of the is wargaming hobby, and offers the chance to create your own, custom painted and designed, miniature Warhammer army for wargaming. This miniature army concept has also been used in other miniature wargamers, both historical, sci-fi, and fantasy, and is part of the reason many miniature games are so popular, like Flames of War and DBA.
An important part of the painting and modeling process for Warhammer, and other miniature soldiers and figures, is the addition of flock, or other ground textures, to the base of the wargaming figure. Most Warhammer figures come with attachable plastic bases, which can be painted, and covered, in suitable material to represent the battleground onto which the Warhammer figure is placed. Many other companies include their own model bases for their miniature figures as well, although I've found the Games-Workshop bases to be the best out of all the wargaming products I've tried.
Flock is a green, small, and powdery material made out of painted, finely-grounded, saw dust. It can be added to a base of a Warhammer figure to give the impression of grass or groundcover, and often really makes a miniature look quite professionally done, and completes the figure nicely. However, I've noticed some gamers neglect to add anything the bases, or just leave them painted one solid color. It's really not too difficult to add flock, or other ground cover for that matter, so it shouldn't be ignored when creating a Warhammer army.
