Chris Rock is soaring high these days. The man started quite quietly, as a stand-up comedian, was on Saturday Night Live, starred in countless movies, hosted the Oscars, and has created a critically and commercially successful TV series called "Everybody Hates Chris". He even wrote a book, "Rock This," and recorded two comedy albums. Now that is a king of all media, so take that Howard Stern.

He started from very humble beginnings, as the oldest of seven children who were reared in Bedford-Stuyvesant. His father brooked no crap and permitted neither disrespect nor disobedience to his word. His brother Tony is an actor and filmmaker, so I guess the talent runs deep in the family. He was born on February 7th, 1966 in Andrews, South Carolina. His parents are Julius who was a former truck driver and Rose, a teacher. Chris was raised on the mean streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, New York and is no stranger to hardship.

It seems that Chris always knew his destiny was to become a comedian. He took his considerable talent to the comedy clubs of New York when he dropped out of high school. Eddie Murphy saw Chris Rock's act at a comedy club and he was so impressed, that he cast him in his movie "Beverly Hills Cop II." Rock played the part of a parking valet. This was his stepping stone into the big time.

Chris Rock also was friends with the late Sam Kinison, so combined with his friendship with Eddie Murphy; Rock was cast in bit parts on some television shows as well as in some movies. When he received the news he was part of SNL in the early '90's, he was well on his way to forging a path of talent on his own.

While he was not a great film actor to start, he was doing well with his stand-up act. He scored big in 1997 with his HBO special "Bring The Pain." This won him two Emmy's. He then began a variety show, "The Chris Rock Show" also in 1997, and that had a three year run that was marked with two CableACE awards.
