Father's Day is upon us. Although it is not a day that I celebrated with my own father, it is one that I have enjoyed with my husband and children over the years. Oftentimes, those days included one of our favorite past times: Watching a movie. And sometimes the movie even had something to do with fathers.

As a movie critic, I thought the event of Father's Day would be a wonderful opportunity to share some of my expertise; in this instance, on movies about fathers .

Over the years, film has explored the relationships between parents and their children, oftentimes with some hilarious results. Other times, movies delved into the inseparable bond that forms between mothers, daughters, fathers, and sons. A few even explored how those relationships can get twisted and tarnished. Most of them, however, held some elements of truth.

Here are 10 of my favorite "father" movies. If you haven't seen them, you might want to check them out. I've even rated them for you, on my typical five star scale, with one being the lowest and five being the highest.

Cheaper By The Dozen was originally done in 1950 and starred Clifton Webb as the father of an even dozen children. It was based on the real life story of a pioneer in the field of motion study, Frank Gilbreth, and his large, close knit family. The original version co-starred Myrna Loy as his stalwart wife, and a bevy of talented young Hollywood stars and starlets. Although a bit old fashioned by today's standards, the movie accurately depicts some of the trials and tribulations that befall most typical American families.

Remade in 2003, the new version starred Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt. In it, the Baker family - - composed of other stars like Piper Peraboo, Hilary Duff, Tom Welling and Ashton Kutcher - - focused more on the outrageous hijinx of their children. However, the film was outlandishly funny and easily spawned a sequel - - "Cheaper by the Dozen 2" a couple of years later.

Takeaways
  • Film has often explored relationships between parents and children.
  • Some father films deal with real issues while others poke fun at life.
  • Fathers are often the object of ridicule in film.

Great choices. Would not have thought of them all for Fathers Day and ya know, I think I still have never seen "The Sound of Music"!
