Downloading music has become a favorite pastime for many of us. There is no doubt that it offers some really great benefits, aside from the fact that it is free. You will also be able to mix and match the songs that you want onto your own cds rather than needing to buy a cd in its entirety from a specific artist for just one of the songs that you like. It also offers you the convenience that many people need, as you do not even need to leave your house in order to make a purchase. Unfortunately, downloading music illegally does come with a number of different consequences which you are probably already aware of. There are often hefty fines which are associated with downloading music illegally. If you think that you will not be caught, keep in mind that it can happen to you. At one point a twelve year old was sued for sharing music illegally. There are also other risks involved, such as the possibility of having your computer infected with viruses that could potentially destroy it. If you want to avoid having to face these consequences, you may want to think about downloading music the legal way. Here, we will take a much closer look at some of the programs which are available for anyone who is interested in legally downloading music.

iTunes

This is probably the most well known and used music downloading program, especially since it has been designed to be compatible with iPods. The cost of downloading a song through the use of iTunes is 99 cents. You can only play music through the iTunes program, but you can also have iTunes on up to five different computers. Anyone who has a Windows or Mac computer is iTunes compatible.

Amazon

Music downloads through Amazon are currently offered for free, but it is licensed and legal to share music with. Many people believe that the main reason music is free through Amazon right now is because they want to "hook" some clients before they decide to start changing. Either way, take advantage of this free and legal music while you can.

I know a few people who had Rhapsody, and they were unbelievably P.O.ed about it. Apparently, once your join this service, it's kind of like owing the Mob a favor---they'll never let you go. In each of their cases, it took the threat of legal action to be able to leave Rhapsody, and even then, they hit my friends' bank accounts for up to 6 months after the cancellation. It's sort of like the AOL of music.
