While my husband was stationed overseas, he said one of the most interesting places that he got to see in Kuwait, was the Kuwait Towers. The size and uniqueness of these towers make them stand out. They are one of the most distinct architectural expressions of the Middle East. They are also one of the country's most famous and important landmarks. The Kuwait Towers are located on the waterfront of the Arabian Gulf in Kuwait City. They were designed to be national icons by a Swedish Company to be both modern and Arabic and then were constructed by a Yugoslavian Company in 1975. The towers were officially opened to the public on March 1st of 1979. They still remain an icon today in Kuwait. The three famous towers are used for water reserves and for entertainment purposes.
Even though in 1990 the interiors of the towers were vandalized during the Iraqi occupation, they were fully restored afterwards. There are pictures from before and after vandalism hanging on the walls inside the tower.
The largest of the towers, which measures 187 meters high, has two spheres to it. The upper one is a revolving observation deck that has a cafeteria in it. It makes a full rotation every 30 minutes so you can get a different view. The lower sphere has three restaurants in the top part of it and about a million gallons of water reserve in the bottom.
The three restaurants are Ofok , Le Cafe, and Royal Cafe. They also have a room for special parties and events and meetings for businessmen. The Ofok restaurant serves a breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet everyday except Fridays and holidays. The Le Café serves everything from oriental to western to Kuwaiti dishes. The tables are situated next to the windows, so you can get a great view of the city and Arabian Gulf while eating. The Royal Café is for the reception of those that are high ranking officials. They serve the high quality appetizers and drinks there.
