George Lucas will forever be known as the director and writer of the original Star Wars film which had the characters Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and many others. He also played a key part in the more recent Star Wars films, which told the story of Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker's father.
Where did all the heroes and villains come from? Lucas studied up on ancient mythology for Star Wars. In creating the series, he drew upon the ancient conflicts between good and evil as the basis of the story. Instead of having his heroes live in a magical land, or out in the American west, he put them in space, in a time and place in space far away.
Lucas' first film was called THX 1138, a homage to stories like George Orwell's "1984." It was a harsh look into a future dominated by androids and robots.
This dark future seems to have led him directly into telling the science fiction tale of Star Wars. Like many westerns, Star Wars has clear villains, as well as heroes, along with groups who move in between good and evil. Han Solo would fit the bill of an outlaw marshal in any western, while Luke Skywalker appears to be a Knight's squire in the early films, and a lightsaber wielding samurai in films like "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi."
While Star Wars catapulted George Lucas into the front of the directing business, Indiana Jones captured the hearts of millions for the exploits of its traveling hero, played by Harrison Ford. The Indiana Jones series of films was also co-created with director Steven Spielberg. The story was later made into a successful TV series.
According to Wikipedia, there is also a TV series planned for Star Wars.
