The art of the tattoo, presumably originated from tribes or early nomadic people in the pre-historic period as evident from the old tombs and writings in different parts of the world, has undergone drastic changes like any other form of fine art. Today, tattooing is a flourishing industry with more and more people getting tattooed.

The tattoo designs that leaves the mark more than the indelible ink used in tattooing are getting more and more creative and innovative and custom made tattoo designs are developed by the imaginative tattooists the world over to quench the insatiable thirst of the modern client.

Choosing a tattoo design may sound quite simple and easy for those who have not done it before. The selection of designs may be the result of all or any one of the many factors including popularity of the style chosen, the trend prevalent during the time of tattooing, or the influence of any person, model, philosophy, or cult to say the least. It is the person who chooses the design that has to live with the same for the rest of his or her life unless of course he or she wants to undergo the trauma of removal of the tattoo or other compromising procedures like redesigning or getting the old one concealed by another.

There was no choice for the early nomadic in choosing the tattoo design since it was thrust upon him as a mark of identity by a group sect or society where the designs were common and pre-decided. Modern tattooing offers immense scope for one to choose the right tattoo of his choice and interest. The tattoos are chosen according to ones interest and taste. The younger generation prefers it as a decoration where no philosophy or message finds a place in the selection. More often the same is done with the fashion prevailing in the locality or the period as a means of ornamentation. This of course being the rule is not without exception.
