My cats love to go outside and romp in the sunshine and fresh air. Unfortunately, they also love to dig in the loose dirt in my gardens and deposit their droppings. If you have the same problem at your house, then read this informative article and learn some effective homemade remedies to keep cats out of your flower and vegetable gardens!

Plant Perimeters of Marigold Flowers
You can easily plant lines of Marigold flowers in front of, or completely around, the perimeters of your flower and vegetable gardens. Marigolds are easy to grow. Just give them some good soil and enough moisture, and they'll thrive.

These flowers come in several varieties. Besides being attractive, they possess a scent that's known to help keep aphids, Carrot Root Flies, slugs, rabbits and, even cats away.

Every year when I get ready to plant a produce garden, I always buy several packs of Marigold seeds along with my vegetable seeds. Then, after I plant my garden, I finish it by putting in a perimeter of Marigolds to keep the pests out. Works every time!

Plant Perimeters of "Scaredy Cat" Plants
There's a relatively new plant available on the market that's known as the "Scaredy Cat", "Dog Be Gone", "Bunny Be Gone" or "Piss Off" plant. Actually, it's the Coleus canina and it's a wildflower that grows in Africa and India.

Just like the Marigold, this plant is appealing to look at. It produces pretty blue flowers. It also emits an odor that is another homemade remedy that will help keep cats (dogs and foxes too) out of your flower and vegetable gardens.

Spread Limestone Over Your Flower Beds
When I say, "Limestone", I don't mean "Lime", which is the white powder you can use to raise the pH levels in acidic soils. I'm referring to the actual small, grayish-white stones. Obviously you can't use limestone in vegetable gardens because it will disappear when you till the soil. But, in established flower gardens, limestone is a natural homemade remedy that will help keep cats from digging and pottying there. Cats like loose dirt, but they don't like to dig in rocks.

Plus, applying a layer of limestone across an entire flower bed will make it more attractive.

There are around 50 cats roaming this neighborhood. Perhaps I should try all of the above.

I never thought of cats as being a gardening issue, makes perfect sense. Of course I know next to nothing about flowers - now tomatoes and onions I can do. :-)
