Zentner's Steakhouse may just be the best known steakhouse in West Texas. The San Angelo eatery has been around for a very long time and has become as West Texas tradition.

When you drive up to Zentner's, you can definitely tell you are at a steakhouse. The sign and building actually has different cattle brands painted on them. When you walk in, the first thing you see in the lobby is that the walls are covered with signed photos of celebrities. Celebs don't hit San Angelo often, but when they do, they visit Zentner's. The restaurant is pretty large and has a rustic décor with several rooms. The atmosphere is definitely casual, so you don't have to get dressed up too much to visit this steakhouse.

The food at Zentner's is outstanding, and the first thing you will see when viewing the menu, which looks like a newspaper and has a lot of history about Zentner's, is the prices. The food isn't cheap, it does cost a little more than your average national chain steakhouse, but that is to be expected. The cheaper steaks such as sirloins will run you $15 plus. Other's can cost you $20 or more. But it is worth it. Your meal will come with salad and rolls, and you can choose either a baked potato or fries as a side.

The steak is fantastic, they are tender and have great flavor. The rolls are also very good, and go great with honey after the meal. They also have outstanding chicken fried steak, which is a Texas favorite. You just can't find good chicken fried steak outside of Texas it seems.

My last trip to Zentner's I ordered a ribeye with a baked potato. I don't visit Zentner's often because of the price, but when I do it is well worth it. The food was great as usual. They also have great soup, and I ordered beef and barley soup instead of salad. My dinner companion ordered the chicken fried steak, which they thought was very good.

"I haven't been here before, and I have to say this is as good of a chicken fry as I've eaten," she said.

Sadly, The Original Zentner's Steakhouse has been sold. The new owner, Henry Hogeda (owner of Henry's Diner), plans to close for remodeling on December 30, 2007. He plans also to change the restaurant's name and menu (likely add Mexican food) and reopen sometime in early 2008.
