Hollywood, California, affordable, family friendly places to be sure and visit.

1)Griffith Park - Home to the famous HOLLYWOOD sign. Also hosts many festivals, film festivals, this weekend is the BBQ Championship (yes, people BBQ and win prizes, it gathers a rather large crowd.)They have a museum which has a large variety of exhibitions throughout the year including the wild west and railroads.
My personal favorite at Griffith park is the Observatory ( which has large telescopes for viewing the cosmos.) If visiting you may find Griffith park closed due to filming. Which if you know in advance, can be a great place to "hang around" and get a glimpse of your favorite movie star. Don't hang to closely though the guard at the entrance may become suspicious!

2)Universal City Walk - This is a free event (pay to park) This is somewhat of an enclosed little city. Once you park your car, you walk about 3 city blocks to the entrance. The street is lined with shops, of all sorts, some very unique shops as well, I found the Oxygen bar to be the most unique. In this shop their are large oxygen type glass cylinders each one has a different scent (mostly aromatherapy) and you breath in the "scent" of your choice. It's really a neat little place, if you ever get the chance stop in a check it out.

Cafe's restaurants and specialty food shops (the popcorn one) is my favorite. All sorts of flavored popcorn made fresh all day. I believe they still give samples. Some very unique tasting popcorn.

Walk is the red carpet (Kodak moment) on the other side of the red carpet is the entrance to the theme park Universal Studios. Which of course you have to pay the admission price for. It's about $40.00 a person but well worth it, if your a movie buff and like to be right in the middle of your favorite movie, Some of the rides (such as Jaws) are NOT for the weak hearted!
