In Hampton Roads, Virginia, our country's birthday is celebrated in high style. Because the military is so ingrained into the culture of area, patriotism here abounds all year long, but no more so than on July 4th.

Even though the Fourth of July is less than one month away from another huge Hampton Roads celebration - - Haborfest - - nothing is held back in honoring the birth of our great nation. The cities of Hampton Roads, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach, all get into the act. Each one offers a variety of activities and events to suit just about anyone's taste. Here are some of the most popular.

CHESAPEAKE
Although not strictly a July 4th celebration, the Fine Arts Commission's Summer Pops "Under the Stars" recognizes our nation's birthday. Additionally, the Todi Summer Symphony will also present a concert. A variety of vendors will be on hand for those who yearn for the perfect summer meal under the stars. To complete the evening, there will be the traditional fireworks finale.

The event is part of America's 400th Anniversary Celebration of Jamestown. It will be held Tuesday, July 3rd, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Chesapeake City Park. Admission is free. Participants are welcome to bring their own chairs or blankets; all the comforts of home to make their evening memorable. Children are, of course, welcome. For more information, call the Chesapeake Parks & Recreation Center at 757-382-6411.

An Independence Day Celebration will also take place at Chesapeake's Lakeside Park on Wednesday, July 4th, from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. It will include a patriotic parade and entertainment, in addition to all the proper holiday food and plenty of family-oriented games. This event is also a part of the Jamestown 2007 - America's 400th Anniversary Celebration. As such, it is free to the public. Parents are more than welcome to come with their children. For more information, contact Brenda Johnson at 7575-543-0828.

Every July 4th event ends in fireworks.

Thanks for the info. I don't live nearby, but have a friend in Virginia Beach who will love the info, as her family is new to the area.
