Every parent can always use extra resources that are offered to them, but not all parents know where to find these resources. A very useful resource in the United States is a program called Healthy Families.

Healthy Families is a government funded program that every parent should have. They are a non-income based program, which means you are eligible even if you make good money or no money. They have lots to offer to pregnant and postpartum parents.

You can be referred to Healthy Families by these people: Doctors office, WIC, Social Services, local schools, family, and your self. There are no age limits for the parent, however you need to be prenatal or up to two weeks after giving birth.

Then after getting a phone number or location for your nearest Healthy Families office, you will need to call to see if you qualify and set up an intake appointment.

Then the intake coordinator will come to your home and go through what feels like mounds of paperwork, but its worth it. They will ask you a series of questions to get a better idea as to what type of help you need. After establishing what you and your family needs they will provide you with a selected agent, who will come to your home once a week to help you reach you goals as a parent.

Healthy Families offers an amazing amount of things to new parents as well as the entire family. I will go over a few of the things that I have personally found to be my favorite parts of this program.

One of my goals, sadly enough, was to learn how to cook healthy meals for my family. So my assigned agent will bring me two new recipes a week to try and cook. She also helps me figure out alternative foods to buy in place of the junk food.

They are also helping me with learning how to help my son develop properly. Due to the fact that he was two months premature, my main concern is his development. They are doing what is called a Denver Screen, which basically is an evaluation of all the areas of development. they also keep track of his progress and help me to know what to work on with him.

Takeaways
  • Non-income based program
  • No costs
  • In home services
