In taking pictures of the park, I noticed that there were three areas that could be the uncountable stairs although it is likely they are the stone steps that reach up to the main part of the park, the part with the playground, from one of the lower level entrances to the park (which is by the east entrance of Hummel Road). There are new stairs by the Pilcher Road entrance off of John J. Pershing Drive which couldn't be the stairs. However, there are old wooden stairs in the less traveled north west part of Hummel park that could have been the uncountable stairs of legend. It is easy to see how uncountable they are now because so many of them are missing. Still, they tend to go both up and down the trail with dirt paths in between.
The only place there might have been an altar is in the Southern part of Hummel Park that is reached by 34th Ave and Oakridge Drive. There is a stone monument there. It used to be taller.
There does not appear to be much truth to the legends about lynchings or ghosts according to the Omaha World Herald and the Great Plains Paranormal Research Society.
I remember hearing the rumors about albinos when I was a child. I've never seen any and I've hiked the trails many times over the last five years. What I have seen are houses that exist above Hummel park. There was also a private club that a visitor from the park would have to pass if they entered the park from Oakridge Drive and 34th Ave. Perhaps, at one time, an albino lived or worked in one of them.
What I never heard about were the dead bodies that have been discovered at Hummel without any sign of them becoming ghosts. The earliest mention I found was from 1947 and related to the University of Nebraska at Omaha. It appeared to be a drunk driving accident.
