Cash for Tots Scandal Rocks Britain

As an American citizen who currently resides in the United Kingdom, I am frankly appalled at the level of government intrusion that now runs rampant in this once great nation. That glorious Britain that P.G. Wodehouse immortalized with his lovable characters in Jeeves and Wooster has all
but disappeared. No longer are there eccentric Lords in manors that sprinkle their sentences liberally with large doses of schoolboy slang such as, "Jolly good. I say, it's a rum go!" In its place instead is a country that could easily be mistaken for the fictional world created by Monty Python actor Terry Gilliam in his movie Brazil.

To begin with, there are now estimated to be around 4.2 million CCTV cameras in the UK which equate to roughly 1 camera for every 14 people.

Some cameras are merely used to watch citizens while others have people in control centers that have the ability to issue verbal warnings to citizens by shouting at them. A senior police officer has gone on record as saying that this is "an Orwellian situation," and further states, "I really don't think that's the kind of country I want to live in." Police state that the average Briton is filmed on around 300 cameras each day, usually unaware.

Beyond CCTV cameras there are around 6,000 speed cameras in the country. After the introduction of speed cameras the number of fines rose seven-fold from 260,000 in 2001 to 1.8 million in 2004. Speed cameras are bringing in an extra 20 million pounds of revenue each year to a very happy government.

Sadly, the number of speed cameras in the UK has done little to improve safety. The vast majority of people driving on motorways slam on their brakes for each camera and then speed up again once they are safely out of distance. Those campaigning for safer roads have universally condemned these speed cameras as merely another way for the government to acquire money.

sophie i think that you need to know about a topic before writing about it! maybe you need to think about the fact thta evil people dont walk around with tatoos on their head and focus on blaming them and not on the people who tried to save her? and from what i read there were more people in htis little girls life than the social workers that visited - family, other professionals!

It is sad to hear of what is happening to children at home. Have you heard of Leticia Wright who was murdered by her mother in the UK? Neighbours had informed social services that they needed to look into this young child's life, they visited but said nothing was wrong. Then a month later, the child was found murdered. Sophie

This is frightening. I can't believe this would happen in a civilized nation like the UK. Maybe now that you have a new PM things will change. We can only hope so! Very informative article.

Thank you for sharing this important and disturbing news. Britain is truly degenerating into tyranny and statism. "Orwellian" is indeed the right word to describe what is happening there.

I have heard of such cases here in America as well. I'm not sure about incentives or anything, but I have heard of children being taken for the wrong reasons or no reason at all. I'm not sure how true the stories are, but if it's happening there, it could very well happen here, too. Scary. Poor parents. I feel sorry for the innocent children. Great thought-provoking report. :-)

This kind of stuff happens when government is allowed to run rampant. This will no doubt happen soon in America, but I'm running for President again in 2008 and hope to put a muzzle on runaway government here. A great report that hopefully will open a few eyes.

Great reporting.

Offering funds for nothing more than the meeting of quotas is always a recipe for disaster. It renders all considerations of standards not only useless, but actually counter-productive. Surest way to undermine what can be a good intent. Bush's "No Child Left Behind" springs immediately to mind.
