If you are a resident of Maryland, it is your responsibility to take your car to the Maryland’s Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) once every two years. The Emissions Inspection program is a plan by the state to improve the air quality of the environment. By getting your car inspected you are helping the state of Maryland protect the environment from polluted toxins that your car can produce.

You will receive a notice for your car to be inspected eight weeks prior to the deadline. You can bring your vehicle anytime before the date your car is due for inspection. Make sure you bring your notice with you. Once you arrive at the emissions inspection site, a technician will check your car for leaking fluids, excessive smoke, signs of tampering with the exhaust system, a gas cap, dashboard warning lights, and badly worn tires. The cost of the inspection is $14. Cash, credit cards, and personal checks are accepted. Once the inspection is over, you will receive a certificate if your car passes. If your car fails, you will be referred to the station representative. The station representative can discuss the results with you and point out the area(s) on your vehicle's engine or emission control system to be checked and repaired.

To ensure that your car passes, make sure your vehicle is well maintained. Make sure your exhaust system does not leak or have any holes. Also, make sure no gas, oil, and coolant is leaking. Check your tires as well for baldness.

If you cannot have your vehicle tested by the due date given, you may call VEIP at 1-800-638-8347.

Below is the Hours of operation and locations for emission testing in Maryland:

My truck was to go to emission 11/21/07. I took my truck to be fixed because check engine light was on. They fixed everything but what need to be fixed after checking it with the machine. when I returned because the light was still on the checked it again to tell me i need a ERG Valve. I don't have the money to fix it as of yet. Can I get an Extention?

I also have had for my car longer than 2 years, but I have never received an inspection notice. Is the state going to fine me?

I've had my car since 2004 and the MVA has never mailed me a notice. Should I call them to set up an appointment? Since I have not had my car inspected, will the state fine me?

This most certainly does not include most of the locations in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. Not very useful
