It's a great time of year, the time of year when many households stop cooking indoors and transition their cooking to the grill they keep in their back yard. Many people love grilled chicken, yet they fail to realize chicken thighs can save them money. Most families when they think of grilling chicken think of whole chickens, chicken parts, or boneless and skinless chicken breasts. Of course the food suppliers all realize this as well, and the prices on these pieces of chicken are never reduced quite as much as another similar piece of chicken. This piece of chicken is the chicken thigh. Many people shy away from these pieces of chicken because they view them as being too fatty. They do have a higher fat content than other parts of the chicken, but when grilled properly the amount of fat is not that much more than a boneless and skinless chicken breast.

As a father of an 18 month old son, I have found it is important to save money whenever possible, at the same time I still want to prepare meals that are high quality for my family. Over the past couple of years I have read a lot of material about grilling and experimented with different cuts of meat and styles of cooking it on the grill. I have published several articles on different grilling styles and techniques for those that are new to the exciting world of cooking outdoors on a grill. I have realized that you do not have to pay premium prices to get a high quality meal cooked on the grill. The key is that you purchase the meat while it is on sale and freeze it, and that you purchase the appropriate cuts of meat. Do not just buy meat because it is on sale, because it might not meet your desired cooking style.

Takeaways
  • Chicken thighs are higher in fat content, but some fat will cook away while grilling.
  • Chicken thighs are the perfect size for sandwiches.
  • The bourbon chicken you see at malls is quite often made using chicken thighs.
Did You Know?
Check the packages closely, some packs of chicken thights are trimmed nicer than others for the same exact price.

Yes. Thighs are the moistest part of the chicken, and the hardest to overcook - too often underestimated.
