It's summer time again and school is out, but the teaching of our children can and should continue.

As the mother of a ten-year-old daughter that has never once had a single 'C' on her report card, I take education very seriously and believe in teaching my children year-round.

Here's an excellent technique that I have personally used, that should help better prepare your children throughout the summer for the upcoming school year.

The first thing you want to do is visit your neighborhood Wal-Mart, Big Lots or K-Mart and find the learning section for children. That will provide you with flash cards, phonics books an all sorts of other educational material for all grades and ages of children.

You will also want to make sure that you have a Webster's Dictionary in your home.

Once you have all your supplies, the next step is to start giving your kids five to twenty vocabulary words per week depending on the grade and age of the child.

For children in fourth grade and up, I suggest giving them twenty spelling words per week.

Have them be responsible for writing each spelling word ten times each and knowing the definitions and correct spelling for every word.

You will also want to have your child write you a story every week using at least eight or more words from the spelling list you created. Give out a new list of words every Monday with a test on the words and definitions every Friday.

For children in second and third grades, make the list no longer than 15 words each week.

Have your child write each word ten times each and to put the words in alphabetical order.

Instead of having your child write a story, have them read you a least two to three books per day while having them complete at least two pages per day in the phonics books.

For preschoolers to first-graders, the spelling list should be no more than five words per week. Set your child on a schedule to study their spelling words with you for approximately an hour a day.
