Birds are unique. They have unique patterns in their singing, mating, and nesting. They also have unique preferences in what bird feeders they are attracted to. If you want to have a particular bird take up residence on your property, it is important that you provide the type of bird feeder that bird likes. If you are wanting to attract small birds to your home, you should have a hopper feeder. I’m sure you are familiar with hopper feeders. They have sides, and seed spills out the bottom as it is eaten. These feeders should not be packed with large seeds. The small platforms will not accommodate the larger birds, and this feeder is a way to ensure that your smaller feathered friends will get lunch. If insects are a nuisance at your home, you may want to provide a suet feeder. The birds that like to eat suet are also insect eaters. These are simply little baskets that hold a suet cake in them. Suet cakes can be bought at any home and garden center. If you have leftovers like nuts, fruit, or bread on a regular basis, you may want to consider having a platform feeder. This feeder is simply what it states. It is a platform between two posts. All that is required is to pour your feed, or place your bread and fruit scrapes, onto the platform. You can be assured that you will have Mockingbirds, Blue Jays, Cardinals and Doves visit your platform feeder. You can make a small one foot platform, or go as large as you like. The possibilities are endless. If you want to supply one of the smallest birds a regular meal, you may want to install a hanging hummingbird feeder. You simply boil a small amount of sugar in water and fill it up. You should change the water in this feeder every few days. Despite what you may have heard, you should never add food coloring to the sugar water. Your hummingbird feeder should be placed where children cannot pull it down. If you are interested in having finches and chickadees visit your home, you should provide them with a tube feeder. It is a feeder with openings up and down the neck. If larger birds start to take over your tube feeder, simply shorten the perches. That will assure that only the finch and little chickadees will have access to this supply. What are your favorite birds? What kind would you like to see at your home? Simply do a little investigation work, and you will have the welcome mat displayed for all your feathered friends.
