Part I of this series on what to expect from the Air Force's TAP class provided an overview of what goes on in the classroom. This article will go into some more detail about what to expect when you are planning on retiring.

What to expect from the Military Transition Assistance Programme (TAP) #4 Medical

Active duty members receive free health care coverage for the duration of their career. When they retire, they are still eligible to receive medical benefits, but at some cost. For example, Tricare Prime is available at a yearly cost of $460 for a couple. It is still much more reasonable than civilian rates, and can be paid in one lump sum or on a monthly basis. To be eligible for this benefit, you must live in a Tricare Prime region of the country. If you decide to move to another country, you will only be covered by Tricare Standard, so will most likely require an additional form of medical coverage.

What to Expect from the Military Transition Assistance Programme (TAP) #5 Life insurance

The Air Force offers a life insurance programme for surviving spouses of retired military members, called the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP). However, it comes at a cost once the retirement date is effective, whereas, it is free for active duty members. A benefit of enrolling in this programme is that premiums are tax free. But it is a very personal decision and the instructors will not try to push any of their personal beliefs onto you as you decide whether you will accept this form of coverage. They will clearly state that if you opt out of this provision, the military pension will cease upon the date of your spouse's death.

Very interesting. It's good to know that soldiers are being taken care of after they retire.
