iStockphoto.com is a great site for professional and amateur photographers to make extra money. iStock allows you to sell your photos through their website for up to 40% royalties. Your images can be of people, models, objects, scenery, or just about anything; as long as they are well taken photographs. They also provide you with a comprehensive photographers training manual that is built into the site, so there is never any confusion about what they will and will not accept.

I have a read a lot of short reviews and articles about iStock before, but felt it was still necessary to write a more in depth explanation of how the site works. Most of the articles I have read written about the site simply say "Make money selling your photos on iStock," but don't get any deeper than that. Istockphoto.com is not a website for any consumer with a digital camera to post their pictures on. Remember, iStock is actually in the business of SELLING your photos. They are not paying you for page views or ad clicks. This means that you have to be a talented photographer with marketable images if you are going to consider becoming a member.

Before you are accepted as a member of iStock, you must submit samples of your work to be reviewed by the site's moderators. If they feel that your work is of the quality they are looking for, they will notify you that your account has been approved via email. You will also need to provide them with a scan or photo of your drivers license to prove you are of legal age and in fact who you say you are. After you're approved, you are ready to start selling your photos.

Now, this application procedure may seem like a bit of a hassle, but if you are a good photographer and confident in your work, it should be well worth it. Many people and companies purchase photos through iStock. Web designers, writers, and publications are always in need of professional quality images to accompany their websites and stories.

Takeaways
  • iStock will sell your pictures for you.
  • iStock only accepts professional quality images.
