Stepping Up and Moving On
Now, I don't claim to be a
Disney princess. Nor am I a true philosopher--nuances of logic and immaterial objects cause me great consternation. However, the movie Pocahontas perfectly blends these two rea
lms with the main character's bold declaration: "The thing I like about rivers is: you can't step in the same river twice." The actual phrase is from Heraclitus and he says, "No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man." Actually, I beg to differ with such a wise statement. Some people step over and over into the same "river" be it at work, home or in society. Even worse, there are some of us who are no better than rocks sitting on the riverbed, letting the river wash over us and wear us away. Why would we do such a thing? Surely we can decide to make a change. Why do we find it so hard to follow through with a good resolution?
Tonight, my husband and I sat around the
kitchen table and discussed our budget, our future plans, vision and motivation. What a great late night conversation. It was like college days all over again--except with a mortgage. We discussed and we know what needs to be done to move forward. Why don't we do it? Honestly, I have an image in my head of us like those rocks I mentioned earlier. The water moves over us, but we don't move in it. I have been thinking about it and here are my thoughts on why we don't take risks and find adventure. One, we like to keep to the "status quo." Second, sometimes we're just plain lazy. Finally, and the must breath-taking to me, it's about fear.
To navigate that often ominous ocean known as the business world, you need to understand the power and purpose of goals; aspire to something higher; plan, but don't procrastinate; and, finally, cease fearing failure.
