The preparation of all the documentation required for the family based immigration visa is quite exhaustive and require careful and systematic planning. I would cover the documentation required, mainly with respect to Indians; however, they remain more or less same for the immigrants from all other countries. Once you are notified by INS authorities from the USA, to be ready with all the documents, you must immediately start compiling the same.

The first and foremost is Passport, valid for at least one year from the date you are likely to be interviewed for visa. The form to DS-230 part-1 and 2 must be kept ready, duly filled in. Do not sign at the bottom of part-2 of this form, as you are required to sign in presence of embassy officer during the visa interview. Your marriage certificate is the next. This original certificate should be in English and the names in this certificate should be exactly the same as per your and your spouse's name appearing in passports. There should not be even a mistake of a single letter or in any prefixes or suffixes. Next are the birth certificates for all the members of your family members that are going to be migrating with you. These original certificates also should be in English. If the birth certificates can not be made available in English, you must have their English translations, duly signed and certified by a government notary. In case, no birth certificates are available, the affidavits on Rs.50 stamp paper by 2 of your elderly relatives/friends, duly notarized, are also acceptable.

Did You Know?
Many varities of documents are required to be made ready by the applicants prior to the visa interview. Even a small error in one of such documents can prove vital, resulting in one more visit to embassy office, adding to time delay in getting such visa.
