Make Your Own List and Compare

I love talking about this subject because there is always some calculated formula that the so called experts come up with to decide who is #1 and who is #10. Then of course people like you and me get irritated at some of the choices and wonder why other pitching greats never make the list. What do y
ou look for in the best pitcher of all-time? Is it career strikeouts, career wins, career era, world series championships, record in the playoffs. Its so hard to take everything into account and that's why this is an absolute blast! Let the debates begin.

#10 Lefty Grove (1900-1975): Robert Moses "Lefty" Grove started his career in the Baltimore Orioles organization in the minor leagues in 1920 and stayed there through 1924 until Jack Dunn sold him to the Philadelphia Athletics for $100,500 which was the highest amount ever paid for a player at that time. Between 1929-1931 the Athletics won the pennant all three years and the World Series twice in which Grove had a combined record of 79-15 over that span. He won a record of 9 E.R.A. (earned run average titles) over the course of his career and 1 MVP award in 1931. Over his career he recorded a 300-141 record with a 68% winning percentage which is 8th all-time. He finally retired in 1941 and was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1947.

  • Nolan Ryan
  • Roger Clemens
  • Cy Young

Everyone has there own list, but noone ever really does there homework. This list is a joke. Take a look at the pitchers who dominated for at least 10 years. Who cares if they pitched 20 years. Were they dominate. Look at Sandy Koufax, Juan Marichal, Steve Carlton , Bob Gibson, Walter Johnson, Grover Cleveland Alexander. Although I think Greg Maduux iwas a good pitcher, he was a little overrated. Just take a look at Juan Marichals record over a 10-12 year period and you can see how dominant he was. Bob Gibson as well. I love Nolan Ryan, but not even in the top ten. Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. Not even close. Take a good close look at Greg Maddux average inings pitched during his last 8 years, and then 5. Its a joke. Barely averaging 6.5 inings. I'm sorry, but the pitchers of the 60s ,70s were the best, Stats dont lie.

I'm sorry but if Randy Johnson and Nolan Ryan cant make the top 5, i dont want to hear it. Yes i do agree with Clemens, Cy Young, and Walter Johnson being in top 5 but Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson not making it???????? Thats crazy. like strikeouts and hits per 9 innings dont say something about a pitcher and his career. On top of that look where they do stand in line in all-time strikeouts, number 1 and 2. Randy Johnson will probably reach 5,000 if he plays another season or two and there will probably never be another pitcher who can reach what Ryan did and he did this in modern baseball times too. and Koufax oh yeah so take Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan, Roger Clemens, Sandy Koufax, Walter Johnson, and Cy Young and kick one of 'em out and you got a real Top 5 list. and as for top ten,.......... shame on you for not putting Bob Feller in there.

Remember there can only be 10. K-Rod does not belong on a top 10 of all time pitchers. Feller, Fingers, and Maddux can all make arguments for themselves. At the time this was written (June 2007) this was off of someone else's list. I only added stories to each players. In fact, still can't tell you the order after I just read it. I'll make my own list soon. Thanks for responding. Whereever you all are finding this from.

Hey Everyone, thanks for all the comments on this article. It was written over a year ago now and I wanted to come by and read it over again. I have no idea why everyone is seeing now considering it only had about 3,000 views a few months ago and is now over 13,000. To answer some questions, the main one is the whole Sandy Koufax mystery. Honestly I have no idea or remember why I said he hadn't won any Cy Young awards considering earlier in the paragraph I even state he did. Wherever that came from I have no idea so my apologies for the miscue. As for Maddux, Fingers, Feller, and whoever is jocking K-Rod here's a quick answer above.
