During Election time, we hear candidates described as, "Moderate," "Hard-line," or "Ultra," "Pure," or "Extreme," and this confuses some people. There are significant differences between the three distinctions.

The five terms can be used to describe Democrats, Republicans, or Independent candidates. There are varying degrees of why this term is used, and the connotations that go along with the terminology.

Moderate

"Moderate," is used to describe someone who falls near the middle politically between the line of Democrats and Republicans. These, "Moderates," usually hold some views and values of each Political Party.

Traditionally, "Moderates," are more appealing to the American voters since most Americans are located near the middle of the political spectrum. There are usually positive undertones to labeling someone as a, "Moderate," since a, "Moderate," candidate appears to be more interested in compromise.

Ultra

The term, "Ultra," is used to signify a candidate that is categorically located at one of the further ends of the political spectrum. The term is usually accompanied by the words, "liberal," or "conservative."

While not being at the ultimate extreme of the political spectrum, an, "Ultra," is fairly close. The term, "Ultra," is usually used to describe a Democrat that is stout in their Party's belief system. It is usually used as a derogatory term since it is meant to signify that the candidate is not interested, usually, in compromise.

Hard-Line

A, "Hard-Line," is someone that can fall anywhere on the political spectrum. This type of candidate is someone who never has an interest in compromise, and will do anything to support his or her Political Party.

A, "Hard-Line," is usually a term that is used by the opponents of a candidate who want that candidate to appear out of touch with society. A, "Hard-Liner," will be portrayed as someone who will slow down the governmental processes to push their own personal beliefs.
