It used to be that the idea of earning a college degree online was a dubious consideration at best. Today that opinion has changed and gaining an education online is not only a possible but also a viable option for many. This is especially true for students too busy to fit a traditional on-campus learning experience into their lives. For the career-oriented or family-oriented person (perhaps a parent with a small child/ren at home) an online degree can prove to be a phenomenal opportunity for furthering ones education whereas prior to this medium of learning becoming acceptable, the chance to do so may have been slim or non-existent. I know this to be true because I have earned both my undergraduate and my graduate degrees in an entirely online environment. The first thing to know in order to be successful student in an online learning environment is that you have to be organized. This is very important because there are many layers within each class and you have to be certain of what exactly is due, when it is due, and what the specific requirements for the assignment will be. There are also chat or 'online classroom' times assigned in some classes, so even though you are not in a traditional classroom setting, you still have to organize your time (and your assignments) well.
The second thing to know is you have to exercise a certain amount of discipline. In an online environment it could be very easy to, and I have seen it done many times, put an assignment aside until it is very close to the due date. This almost always results in disaster. You have to create the mindset that you are going to get an early start on your assignments (glitches do come up, especially in the world of computers) and absolutely stick to that. If you wait until the last minute, there will be times that you are letting others in your online groups (a common feature of online courses) or yourself down. Disciplining yourself to be motivated is essential to the success of earning your degree.
