MP4 players from China are often quite cheap and affordable. These MP4 players sometimes are clones of the popular iPod or Sandisk style players on the exterior, but have their own unique browser style system that is different from most brand name MP3 and MP4 players. Sometimes, this media browser can be more difficult to understand and get the hang of then most brand name products MP4 and MP3 players, but, you get what you pay for!

Firmware is the type of program that governs how a MP4 and MP3 player and its browser functions. There are many different versions of digital audio player firmware floating around on the Internet, and some fan sites for these cheap Chinese and no-name brand MP4 players have collections of them. Some types of firmware are even 'moddable' and can be tweaked and customized to suit each user, although this can be very risky for people who aren't familiar with these devices and their programs.

There are programs available online for those interested in extracting their firmware to their PCs, either for backing it up in case of player failure, or for modding their firmware's graphics, setup, etc. Some people have even made custom-designed 'iPod' style browsers for their MP4 players, and other have created some really great 'themes' that they've loaded onto their players. Use the S1FwX program to extract firmware before trying to do anything special with your player, and make sure to follow the instructions on backing your player up before hand.

While many people are interested in 'upgrading' their firmware on their MP4 player, this is often, if not always, discouraged. Why? This is because loading the wrong or incorrect firmware from your PC to your MP3 or MP4 player can often leave you with a malfunctioning or even a 'dead' player. The best rule of the thumb generally seems to be to stick with the firmware that came with your MP4 player, and don't try to upgrade it.
