The maid of honor (or matron of honor, if married) serves as the bride's right-hand woman during the engagement and wedding. Usually a sister or best friend of the bride, she may play several important roles: from advisor to administrator, and from comforter to counselor.

Before the Wedding Day Arrives

The maid of honor's level of pre-wedding responsibility will depend on her geographical proximity to the bride. If they live near each other, the maid of honor can be a huge asset to the bride throughout the planning of the wedding.

The maid of honor may help the bride select her invitations, compile her guest list, and addressing the invitations with her.

She may help the bride to shop for dresses, shoes, and accessories for the bride and wedding party. She might coordinate the collection of monies for bridal party outfits. If needed, she will also schedule dress fittings and beauty appointments for wedding party (if needed)

The maid of honor might accompany the bride to her favorite stores and help with bridal gift registries.

Very likely, the maid of honor will host a bridal shower, perhaps with the other bridesmaids.

She will attend as many bridal showers as possible and keep track of shower gifts. Afterwards, she will compile a list of gifts, including givers' names and addresses (for thank-you notes). She will designate a bridesmaid or another guest to construct bow bouquets at bridal showers. (Remember! Each broken ribbon is supposed to stand for a baby the new couple will have!)

The maid of honor will help to create wedding party favors (birdseed packets, table tags, etc.).

If the bride wishes, the maid of honor will work with the other bridesmaids to plan a bachelorette party, makeover day, or other gals' getaway before the wedding.

She will participate in the wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner (traditionally hosted by the groom and his family) and attend the bridal party brunch or other festivities on the wedding day.
