Business Consultants can be a wise investment for a small business. On the other hand, if you do not follow the suggestions of the small business consultant, it is a waste of money and time. The key is to find a small business consultant who will give fantastic advice and the business owner will follow through with the suggestions.

What are the qualities and characteristics should a business owner look for in a consultant? How can this be determined by talking to the small business consultant? What other things should a small business owner considered in hiring a consultant?

There are no easy set in stone answers to these questions. However, we can give some guidelines to make the decision process easier.

First, you need to get along with the general personality of the consultant. It doesn't matter how intelligent the consultant is, if the business owner does not get along with the consultant, the advice will probably be not used. The owner doesn't have to be best friends, but enjoys and respects the consultant.

Second, listen to the consultant views on selected small business topics. If they differ greatly from the business owner, it is not a good match. Most small business owners are conservative in nature and try to avoid risk. If the consultant suggests things that are opposed by the owner, it will not be followed through. You should always talk to at least two consultants before making a decision.

Check the testimonials the consultant has on his brochures or website. Talking to previous business owners to find out what they like and didn't like about the consultant. Ask them if they follow through with the suggestions. If not, why did they ignore the advice?

Check the credentials of the consultant. This is less important than testimonials or personal interview. It can make the difference if the decision is close.
