Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, is a place of peace and tranquility, a place to come when you want to get away from the modern world and experience the good life. It is small, only about 16 miles long and a mile wide and most of it is federal land, federal park land, with just the village itself being privately owned. There will not be any development on the island ever. It will forever be a quiet good life get way.

Spend a weekend on the island. It is not a hard thing to do. Enjoy the 16 miles of pure white beach, rated one of the best in the country. Take a walking tour of the village, or a bicycle tour if that is your preference It surrounds Silver Lake Harbor and is surrounded by Pamlico Sound and Ocracoke, sort of horseshoe shaped, with the harbor inclosed in the middle. It is a pleasant walk, past old time stores and houses, much the way it was when the village was first established, except for the fact that cars have replaced horse transportation.

Ocracoke Island, North Carolina, is part of The Cape Hatteras National Seashore, one of three islands. Make sure to spend some of your weekend in the park, visit the historic lighthouse, learn about one of the Islands old time visitors, Edward Teach, the infamous Blackbeard the Pirate, the scourge of the Carribean.

And the beaches, 16 or so miles of undeveloped beaches-by the way beach wheelchairs are available- are in the park and although undeveloped, do have life guards. Spend an afternoon enjoying the good life on a beach the way nature intended them to be. If you do not stay in one of the B&B's in the village, then you can camp in the park. The park has four campgrounds. Camping is allowed only in these campgrounds. Camping on the beach is prohibited. Campers should prepare carefully for the natural conditions to be found at the park. Camping is definitely a part of the good life.
