June : Too Early to Discuss Fantasy Football

Fantasy Football is Great but June is Too Early for It

Lately I have been seeing quite an amount of people discussing fantasy football. Fantasy sports are quite the hobby of mine. As of now I am doing fairly well in my fantasy baseball league and this fall I will be in my share of fantasy football leagues as well. Writers and experts talking about fantasy football doesn't bother me at all.

However it's more than a little odd to me that I am seeing so many articles about fantasy football in the month of June. For starters exhibition games don't even begin until August. The games that matter are still three months away. The point is that June is just too early to be discussing fantasy football. Here are three reasons why.

1. The Injury Bug

A lot can go wrong for teams between the beginning of July and the first week of the NFL season. Don't believe me? Just ask the Cleveland Browns. We can sit around for the entire month of June and predict which players will be stars in the upcoming season. Truth is that there is no guarantee that any player will even be starting the season at this point of the year. Anything can happen from some freak injury during a mini-camp to a joyride on a motorcycle gone terribly wrong.

2. Controversies

Obviously your first-round pick in fantasy football is a definite starter (if not perhaps you should reconsider this whole “fantasy sports” thing). How many people are in the league will be a determining factor on whether or not team controversies will affect your draft. For example, if there are 12 people in your league and you're looking at a good backup quarterback late in the draft, you may eye up drafting Brady Quinn as there will be few quarterbacks left. Right now most of the talk in Cleveland is that Charlie Frye will be the starter in September. A lot can happen between now and then, though, and if Quinn wins the starting spot he just be the guy you want to get in the later rounds.

3. Camps don't showcase sleeper picks

Great article. I'm not in to fantasy football, but LOVE watching football and can't wait for the season to start :)

I agree with your basic premise, Zac; June is way too early to start. But I think that overall, Americans are such football fanatics, they'll seek out any means possible to link into the sport. Great job!

Well said, Zac. Sophie

You make valid points Zak. But, discussing fantasy football in June is the best way to get over the boring time between mini-camp and training camp.

No matter the sport, it's never too early to get your fantays league's mock draft for the first round going!

Zac, I usually don't start thinking about or discussing FFB until at least late July, but the new site that I write for has me interested earlier than ever. The last couple of years I didn't get started until right b4 the season, but have already written a few pieces that will be up soon.

Yeah it's way too early to rate players and stuff. But it's just right for planning draft strategy. Looking forward to getting the email from my commissioner though asking if, "Everybody is Ready for Some Football!"
