Are you looking for something interesting to do while in Chicago this summer? Try Chinatown for some ethnic food, enticing entertainment and superior shopping. Adults and kids alike will have a fun weekend while walking the streets of Chinatown and getting a mere glance of what life in China is really like today. Starting in the 1870's, Chinese immigrants started to flee to America and settle in the eight block section of Chicago which is now better know as "Chinatown". It is an ethnic neighborhood that still thrives with Chinese-Americans and has become one of the largest Chinese immigrant populations in America. Chinatown should not be confused with "New Chinatown" which is located downtown Chicago on Argyle Street on the North side of the city. It was not until the 1950 and 1960's that the city grew into the large size that it is today, due to strict immigrant rules governed by the Communist Chinese government before that time.
Located on Cermak and Wentworth Avenues, near the South side of Chicago is the original Chinatown. In my opinion the original Chinatown is more authentic and is less busy with tourists since New Chinatown has a more central location inside of Chicago. Do not fear though, Chinatown has just as much to offer any visitor as what the New Chinatown has to offer.
Going to Chinatown throughout my childhood, I have seen the section of the city grow throughout the ages. To get there, the streets are accessible by car, bus, foot or even train. To find out more information on transportation press here.
Once you get pass the large gateway which was built in 1975, one will notice an entire street filled with restaurants, bakeries, stores and banks. In addition, throughout the summer there are a few top-notch events that are happening that will entertain all ages.
Check out these restaurants:
1. Laoszechuan Restaurant
2. Mulan Restaurant
3. Chinatown Phoenix
4. Seven Treasures
5. Shui Wah located on 2162A S. Archer Ave.
Check out these Bakeries:
1. Chiu Quon Bakery located on 2242 S. Wentworth Ave.
2. Eldo Cake & Bakery located on 227 W. Cermak Rd.
3. Hong Li Bakery located on 2339A S Wentworth Ave.
