Even though there have been metal detectors for years, the advance in technology in recent years has been a boon to the treasure hunting enthusiasts. With the ease, affordability, and availability of a wide variety of detectors, there is a rise in the number of new enthusiasts and the need to be informed on the types and uses of the detectors.

While in the past metal detectors could detect metal, they could not distinguish simple trash from a true treasure. Now, with the superior technology, a practiced treasure hunter can differentiate trash from valuables such as coins or jewelry. There are many types of metal detectors available designed with certain features to meet certain needs.

The current technology works by sending electrical energy through a coil creating a magnetic field. This field can then sense a metallic object reacting to that field. Some types of detecting equipment are specially designed for hunting treasure and deep caches; others were created for more general purposes such as coin and jewelry hunting. Some Metal detectors are made specifically for underwater or beach hunting. A popular detector is made to prospect for gold nuggets.

When considering a hobby in hunting treasure with a metal detector, it should be considered what model is the best fit for their purpose. There are many models from many makers and the decision can be difficult and confusing. Size and weight can also be a factor in choosing a metal detector. Many people opt for a general purpose machine. These machines are made to do as many of the specialty functions as well as possible. This does, of course, require some degree of compromise in the design and functionality. No general purpose metal detector can do all of the specialty functions as well as those specifically designed for that function, so it is important to know what functions are most important to you.
