Napoleon Dynamite brought films about losers back in vogue. Movies and television shows about oddballs have been around since at least Revenge of the Nerds a generation ago; however, the last few years they have definitely experienced a rebirth in popularity.

Into this mix arrives Eagle vs Shark, an unlikely sweet love story. Our heroine is Lily (Loren Horsley). She is a cashier at a fast food joint, who lives everyday to wait on Jarrod (Jemaine Clement). Both are basically outcasts. Lily is incredibly shy and doesn't seem to have any friends or positive human interaction other than her loving brother. Jarrod, on the other hand, is basically Napoleon about 10 years down the line. His lack of social graces almost makes Lily look normal by comparison. She is too timid to make the first move, but after being fired from her job she figures what the hell. Despite being reserved, when Lily knows what she wants, she goes full stop to get it.

Jarrod throws a costume party (the theme being come as your favorite animal) which Lily crashes. The main focus of the party revolves around a video game-playing contest. Jarrod is the undisputed champion of the Mortal Kombat clone, but it gives Lily a chance to impress her prey. As she reaches the finals, it's apparent he has taken notice. Later, back in his room, "sparks" fly between them, though both are painfully awkward in expressing their emotions.

Lily tries to reel in Jarrod, but soon he tells her about his need to return to his hometown. A bully from his youth is returning and Jarrod seeks to even the score. Lily gets her brother to drive them there and she spends a few days with Jarrod and his family as he plans his showdown.
