Temperament: Dalmations are very happy, and loyal dogs. They are overflowing with energy, and they just love to play! Dalmations need plenty of attention. If your Dalmation feels like it's not getting enough attetion, it may go into a state of depression. Because of that Dalmations don't do very well as yard dogs, they need to spend time with you as much as they can . Dalmations are very sensitive animals and have excellent memories. If anything bad was ever done to them they remember it for years. Dalmations love children but sometimes they may have too much energy for toddlers. They do just fine with other pets in the household, but if they come upon a strange dog they may be aggressive towards it, especially male dogs. Male dogs usually do not like other male dogs. Socialization is important, it's best to start when they are puppies. Dalmations are pretty intelligent animals, but sometimes they have the will to go their own way. Consistent and firm training will help. Let your Dalmation know what he is supposed to do and what not to do without hurting it. Dalmations usually can be trained to a high level of obedience if taught the right way. Some can be trained for defence and they make for good watchdogs. Dalmations tend to have large litters of puppies, even up to 15. If they are not raised properly at a young age they can become aggressive.
Housebreaking: Some Dalmations can be difficult to housetrain. Although extremely itelligent, they still may have some difficulty. Most Dalmations do better with positive reinforcement such as treats, and belly rubs, rather than constant "no's".
Living Arrangements: Dalmations do not do well as apartment dogs unless you are able to take them out for a short walk several times a day. Walks are often needed to prevent desctructivness. They are highly active inside, and at least a moderately sized yard will do well for them. Warmer climates are best for the Dalmation.
Grooming: The Dalmation sheds highly twice a year. Frequent brushing is needed to deal with the constant shedding. Otherwise, Dalmations are very clean animals.
