Grunge God Grows Up

Multi-talented, Grammy award winning artist Chris Cornell has recently released a brand spankin' new CD titled 'Carry On'. It isn't for everyone, but if you appreciate Chris Cornell, it's a must. No screaming, BadmotorChris here, nope. "He doesn't live here anymore", as the lyrics from one of the 14 tracks (15, 16 and 17 in some other countries outside of the US), 'Ghosts', states.

So, what happened to BadmotorChris? Well, I'll tell ya. He grew up, he got clean, he fell in love and he had a couple of children. Plain and simple. I wish him all the best...who wouldn't want t find that in their life? Change is constant and change is good.

As far as the album itself goes, it falls a little short. Not short of my expectations, just short in general. Some of the songs could have been a little longer and there could have been more of them, although I doubt there would ever be enough Cornell to make me happy.

There are some solid rockers here. 'No Such Thing', the first track on the album, is probably the biggest. It immediately hits you like a ton of bricks. You will undoubtedly see comparisons to Stone Temple Pilots and there is a similar feel to pieces of the song's music, but it isn't to the point that the song drowns in it. The chorus does take some getting used to, so be forewarned. The melody of the vocals just don't seem to mesh with the guitars at first, but eventually your ears will make sense of it.

On to 'Poison Eye'. This song is a big trek off the beaten path for Chris. Poppy to the brim. Very catchy. And maybe on purpose. The lyrics are a bit sinister and to mesh that with a additively peppy tune is typical ironic Cornell genius. "I put this hook inside so you won't soon forget". Indeed Chris, the catchy hook in this song won't let me forget. One listen and you will be humming this one all day long.

Great review Kraven. Ever think about writing for Rolling Stone... I hear they can use some help. hehehe

Kraven - I commend you, you actually took the time to provide clear, researched information and back-up for your opinions instead of giving your opinion with no basis behind it. This is how a review should be written, it actually gives the reader something to compare so that they can make their own informed opinion. Thank you.

No, Yvonne, I am not the child. As you can see, your comments are still in tact here...I have not deleted them. Nothing I said in comment form on your review was rude, it was just stuff you did not want to hear. How your review is not as fleshed out as it could be. How your opinion is not backed up with anything at all. You can go ahead and call me what you would like, it just further goes to show who the real child is. I am sure there are plenty of people here who have not only read both reviews, but also quite a few who caught some of the comments left before you removed them. Please have a little self respect and stop making yourself look so silly.

Must you always be so rude to me? I try to give you a compliment and you act like a high schooler (of course, maybe you are). Unlike the rude comments you left on my review I thought I would be the adult in the situation and say something nice. Obviously you are just too much of a child to take a compliment and leave it at that.

This is the best review I have read so far on Carry On. So refreshing to hear someone critique and appreciate the songs for what they are, and not what other people expect them to be. This is what a CD review should be, insightful with honest descriptions of the music.

Everyone I know has noticed a similarity between NST and Velvet Revolver, not STP. But that's okay, I'll give you that one. This album is a grown up, cleaned up Chris Cornell. Ain't it a beautiful thing to have all that vocal power unleashed in one album? He hasn't sounded this good in years.

Yvonne...you didn't inspire me...Chris Cornell did. Don't assume so much.

Glad to see I inspired you to write a review. I still don't like this CD at all and neither did the two other people I played it for... but each to his own I suppose. Great review nonetheless!

Excellent, excellent review! I couldn't have said it better if the words had come from my own mouth. Carry On definitely has me "hooked". Thank you for the more educated and thoroughly researched review.

A review from some one who gets it! Wonderful, detailed review. Loved the references to BadmotorChris! Most of the reviews I have read seem to be negative simply based on the fact that they expected to hear BadmotorChris and didn't get it rather than listening to Carry On openly and without expectations or bias. It's everything I need in a cd... diverse, emotional, and has a few songs that just make me want to drive fast ;)

Excellent, detailed, review that gives a clear idea of the CD. Much better than some of the half-baked badly researched reviews I`ve read which gave no insight into the music at all! Well done

Thanks for reminding me gypsymoth. I should have put this in the review as well, but US peeps can hear 'Today' and 'Thank You' by purchasing the CD at Target. While supplies last, I assume, Target has those two songs as bonus downloads when you purchase the album.

Cool and thorough review - reads like it comes from someone who's passionate about music in general rather than sitting around waiting for a bandwagon to hitch a ride on. Excellent read! I agree about the extra tracks - I'm in the UK so I got them, but I don't see why they can't be made available to everyone. It's like those daft live videos on VH-1 and MTV websites which are only available in certain territories "for copyright reasons"; how stupid is that? Today is one of the best tracks on the album but not all of us are hearing it.

Kraven, my hat is off to you. A most worthy and enjoyable review. Finally, someone who appreciates Cornell for what he is .... and not what he was! I absolutely love this album and play it continuously. "Killing Birds", "Ghosts", and "She'll Never Be Your Man" are all favorites. "Disappearing Act" should be nominated for a Grammy. The lyrics are pure Cornell. Thanks for blessing my eyes with such a complete and wonderful review.
