The web is an incredible source of knowledge for those looking to learn just about anything and that includes anything related to writing. I've compiled a few websites that I found are helpful in providing basic information on the 'how-to' side of beginning freelance writing. Many writers are self-taught, and many others go to school, either way it doesn't hurt to keep the information and techniques used in professional freelance writing fresh in your minds. A surprising number of universities post information useful to writers on the web. Below are a few mixed in with other relevant websites.
Tone in Business Writing
Purdue University
These two are links to the OWL Handouts page at Purdue University. They have posted links to business writing topics and even basic writing topics concerning the search for a job, like Sample Resumes and Cover Pages.
Oregon University
Link to the 'Style in Business Writing' webpage at Oregon University. This page may be put up for a specific class so I'm not sure how long it will last. It's got all the need to know basics on creating a business-like and understandable document for clients.
Online Technical Writing Book
This is an actual book on technical writing that the author, David A. McMurrey, has converted into html format. It has several pages on different topics. I think I saw a page on abstract writing and other kinds of documents. All of which are very helpful for new copywriters and technical writers who are trying to figure out the format needed for a business document.
CyberJournalist.net
A blog post with some good online journalism tips for those freelancers looking to become online journalists.
www.edit-work.com
A great site with tips for creating a style for and editing of online webpages and content. It's an excellent site if you are thinking about doing some work putting together web content for clients.
Editorial Freelancers Association
This group has been around since 1970. They are kind of like a union for editors and writers working from home. They have a group health insurance plan for members and lots of other benefits. It is a paid membership though.
