What ever happened to Tide laundry detergent? This should have been written back when we were comparing products! I thought it was me. I thought that I was washing my towels wrong. Maybe my husbands work clothes were getting mixed in with my towels and some other clothes. I tried washing out the washer like K. Ray suggested in one of her articles. I tried washing the clothes in hotter water. I tried soaking and going through a second rinse. My towels and some of my other clothes still came out not smelling fresh. They actually came out smelling offensive.

After trying everything I decided to give good old Arm and Hammer laundry detergent a try. It had been years since I ventured out of my Tide territory. I have tried other detergents because they were less expensive. I would either get a rash that I spent more money on trying to cure, and then I would find out it was an allergy to the detergent, or it wouldn't clean my clothes. I finally gave up and just continued with Tide.

I don't know if they have changed their ingredients. I don't know if they are less potent, they are definitely not less expensive. I don't know if it is just me but I know that I am no longer happy with Tide! I decided it was time to just try a little experiment. After all Arm and Hammer was on sale! The magic words to the consumer. It was only $5.00 for two bottles the size of Tide which is over $6.00 now on sale. I thought what the heck go for the gold. Live a little. Don't be a stick in the mud. Isn't that what life is all about? Take a risk once in a while. Hey at my age you have to find excitement in any place you can get it. If that is Meijers well then so be it.

I proudly came home with my two bottles of Arm and Hammer laundry detergent. I really didn't expect to cure my smelly towel problem but at least I got a bargain and I didn't figure it would be any worse. It was amazing! My towels actually smelled good. Maybe it was the fabric softener? No I use that all the time. So I tried washing my husbands' work clothes. They didn't have that tell tale oil smell in them. I washed more clothing and they all smelled great. It is a miracle. I bless you Arm and Hammer laundry detergent.

I'm the opposite, I'm allergic to every laundry detergent except Arm & Hammer and have been using it for years. I'm having problems finding the Arm and Hammer HE detergents in Jonesboro, AR.

I was a faithful Tide user for years. Price got me to try Arm and Hammer. It was always "buy one get one". Well - I guess it caught on because while it is still much cheaper than Tide, the sales are less frequent. I had not noticed the bad smell from Tide, but it has been at least a year since I stopped using it. Clothes are just as clean - if not cleaner than Tide. Arm and Hammer seems to be better food stains. Tide is just not worth the price - and if I can changed detergents after never using anything else - anyone can!! Now, Downey - that's a different story...love that April freshness!!

I happened to try arm & Hammer a few years ago because it was soooo cheap. I was actually suprised at it's performance at getting all my laundry clean and smelling great. It also made everything so super soft without using any fabric softener. Oh and by the way, I have three kids and lots of tough stains, and thought it did just as good as tide if not better!

Some of you may be confusing smell with clean...Tide has a more expensive formulation with more surfactants, builders and enzymes, while A&H uses fewer surfactants, no enzymes and a healthy dose of perfume, It leaves a nice fragrance but is less effective at stain removal. Your clothes may smell clean, they just won't be clean. However if you're one of those rare people who are enzyme sensitive, have lightly soiled laundry or on a budget, A&H is a better alternative than Purex, Ajax or store brands. And for what it's worth A&H powder was very highly rated in Consumer Reports a few years back.

I have been wanting to use the Arm & Hammer HE detergent but have not been able to find it where I live. Where do you purchase the A&H at such a good price? I tried writing the A&H company about store locations, but got no where with them. Thanks for the info.

Just today I was pleasantly surprised by finding the Arm & Hammer in the HE formula on a buy one 100 oz. bottle for 5.99, get one free sale!! I was sickened when I had to purchase a bottle of Tide HE for 12.49 last time and vowed that I would never do that again so, my quest today was to go get the Purex HE formula which they had for 5.69 but then, I just happened to glance over and saw the A & H deal Just took a load out of the dryer and the smell is much better than tide as well as, the clothes feel & look just as clean If you live near a Jewel/Osco...go catch a deal on this before the sale is over ;-)

I agree with the ones that have been Tide users and are now disappointed in it. I have used Tide for years and thought it to be good, but for the last two years, my clothes do not smell clean. I have always been afraid to try others, but due to a good sale on Arm and Hammer I finally broke down and bought my first bottle. I thought it did a good job of cleaning and my laundry actually smelled clean and fresh again.

I'm with you girl. What has happened to Tide. My laundry has never looked worse. I called the Tide people & they assured me, the formula has not changed. Well, I don't believe it. They also agreed to send me coupons in the mail. This was over one month ago & still nothing. I've had it. I'm switching now & I will try the Arm & Hammer. Thanks for the tip. I've been using Tide since I was a kid. I used to love it. Not anymore. Something is wrong ... I smell a rat!

THANK YOU! My husband said thought I needed to get my head checked because after every clothes washing with Tide, I would smell all the shirts and say, "this is gross!" First I thought it was our water, but I tested it without clothes or Tide in it, and it smelled fine. I can't even begin to tell you how disgusting our laundry smelled (after being washed in Tide!) Needless to say, I stopped using it and switched to Wisk. Removes stains far better than Tide ever can, and smells great! NO problems at all. But I will try the Arm & Hammer because it is less expensive than Wisk.

Excellent article.

Funny I actually just switched from Purex (the cheapest of the cheap) because all my clothes fell apart after a few washings to Tide. So far so good, but darn is it expensive, even on sale with double coupons it is still somewhere around $5. Ugh... Anyway I am going to try Arm and Hammer!

I could never afford Tide unless I had a coupon that could be tripled to bring it down to a respectable price. I really love the smell of Gain, but again, I can't afford it. I'll give Arm & Hammer a try. If it helps smelly towels it must be good! Great review!

Great review I have been afraid to venture away from Gain, but I will compare the prices and maybe give Arm and Hammer a try.
