The biggest issue when it comes to practicing speaking in English is that it's a skill that can be difficult to do alone. The other three skills (reading, writing, and listening) can be done alone easily. But if you start talking to yourself to practice speaking, people may very well think you're crazy!

So how can you practice speaking being carried away by the men in the white coats?* Obviously, you need to try to find someone to practice with.

One way to do this is to find other people who are also learning English and practice with them. One thing I notice with my high school students is that they tend to talk to each other in their home language when having social conversations. They do this because it's easier and it's comfortable. However, having a social conversation with a friend who is also learning English is a fabulous way for both of you to practice speaking in English.

If you live in an English-speaking country, go shopping! You can practice your English with sales clerks by asking questions about items in the store or about payment options. Or ask another customer what they think about a particular item or the prices in the store. These are great ways to start conversations and practice your English skills.

But what if you don't live in an English-speaking country? Many larger cities offer 'conversation clubs.' These are clubs where people learning to speak English can get together and practice. Or look for bars or pubs that cater to English-speaking visitors. There are all kinds of people there to start up a conversation with!

Language is everywhere. Even if you don't live in an English-speaking country you can practice English, but if you take a walk down the street (especially in a big city) you may still see names of shops, advertisements, street names, etc. in English. Practicing saying them to yourself is one way to practice your English speaking skills. Numbers are everywhere! Practice saying numbers in English when you see them. Look for phone numbers, car numbers, prices, etc.
