Learning a new language is an intimidating task. One that is largely pushed aside by most Americans. Our education system does not promote this skill making it difficult for those really wishing to learn to do so. Nonetheless it is a very beneficial investment. Learning another language can help individuals in many different walks of life. For the businessman it can help him procure a higher position with a firm that has many international dealings. The academic can investigate primary texts in their original language. The traveler can more easily find their way in a foreign country. Absolutely anyone is capable of making a new friend and speaking another language opens up these possibilities even more. In addition leaning a language exercises your mind and keeps you sharp. I first began learning German simply to fulfill requirements for my degree but soon embraced the process as an end in itself. After only two years I am able to speak fluently and have begun learning a third language. Admittedly it is quite an overwhelming task to begin but here are some tips.

Find a teacher. While it is possible to learn a new language on your own, having someone more experienced who can correct you will help keep you on your toes. Your teacher doesn't necessarily have to be a professional. Rather simply asking a friend who knows the language to speak with you will help you exercise your vocabulary and pronunciation at a quick pace. If you don't know anyone who speaks your selected language, you might ask one of your friends if they would like to learn with you. Having a practice partner who holds you accountable for improvement helps immensely.

Flash cards. These help increase your vocabulary. Even if you never use the flash cards again, simply writing out the words is good practice. Flash cards are convenient way to practice because you can generally carry them with you and learn a couple words regardless of where you are. Try looking at them during commercial breaks or while waiting in line. You'll be surprised how much you'll learn without ever officially dedicating time to intense study.
