I don't usually consider hostels much of a bargain. You pay about half what you would pay for a normal private hotel/motel room, but then you get about half a night's sleep. Unless you can sleep through the Apocalypse or you get really lucky with roommates, you'll be waking up to noisy backpackers crashing into the room at 2 A.M. undoing all their gear and other such interruption and consternation. Not to mention hygiene issues, various flatulent emissions, and what have you. The HI at Fisherman's Wharf isn't any exception to that norm. The dorms range from 6 to 15-ish people per. I've stayed here once each year for the last three years, and each time it's been people crashing in at all kinds of odd hours in Cosmo Kramer style. It's also generally full or near capacity.

I love staying here, and have done several times over the past four summers. Best thing about the hostel is its location (a rural hostel in SF) and its free off-street parking (only hostel in SF to do so in my experience). If you don't like French people farting in your face (an acquired taste I admit) then ask for one of the smaller dorms- the staff have ususally been able to accommodate such requests for me and there are four bed dorms that cost a couple of bucks extra (although you need plenty of advanced notice or luck to get a bed in one).
