Sistercare is a program set up to help these battered women and their children by offering shelter to them. The foundation is a private non-profit organization that helps woman residing in Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry, and Richland counties. According to The State Newspaper, last year alone the Sisitercare organization helped 663 abused woman who were in danger because of the violent situations that existed within their homes and family life, but the problem is that they can not help everyone with the lack of financial support. Although they were able to assist many women, the organization also had to turn away 135 because the facilities did not have enough room for everyone.
These programs need money in order to assist the needy. Taco Bell has stepped up to the financial challenge of helping Sistercare with a fundraiser that has proven to be successful. In the past 14 years, Taco Bell Tacos for Sistercare has raised over $200,000. For every taco sold at several locations Taco Bell will donate $0.10. This will continue until June 29. Fred Kotoshe is the franchisee of the Taco Bells across Columbia that are helping with the fundraiser. Kotoshe has been recognized and honored by Sistercare in the past for his assistance with the community and the batter women's shelters.
According to The State Newspaper, South Carolina is one of the six states with the highest rate of women killed by men. Many battered women do not know what other options they have, so they choose to remain with in the violent situation that exist in their homes. The children are forced to remain in the situation too because they have no other place to go, and are sometimes also battered themselves.
