It seems that many little girls rooms are scattered with Barbie dolls and their accessories, but many little girls do not have a doll house to accompany their vast supply of Barbies. I have found this to be true for my own two young daughters, as well as in the homes of my friends who have young girls. For Christmas and birthdays they usually get one or two more Barbies in addition to all of their other presents, but we have never bought them a full size doll house because it did not fit in our budget.

There are usually high price tags on doll houses that are actually big enough for the Barbies to fit. Most affordable doll houses are small in size and require shorter dolls and small-to-miniature sized doll furniture. So where does this leave the Barbie dolls? Scattered on the floor, with Mom at a loss with what to do with them!

I wanted my daughters to have a doll house that their Barbies would fit in, but didn't know how to afford it (most nice, full-size Barbie doll houses cost $150-$300 or more), so I began to do some brainstorming. I had a light-bulb moment when shopping at Lowe's, and the answer to the doll house dilemma was solved! My girls now have a cute, customized Barbie doll house that they love to play with, and their Barbies are now out of the middle of the floor. If you would like to customize your own adorable doll house for your daughter at a fraction of the cost, here's how:

1. Purchase a 9 cube organizer (white or maple) at Lowe's for $54.88
(Specific info: ClosetMaid CUBEicals™ White W54 9-Cube Organizer. Item # 163236 Model # 864400).

2. Assemble the cube organizer (it's easy to assemble), but do not attach the back piece to the organizer yet.

3. After assembled, measure the dimensions of a cube.

4. Each cube is a room in the doll house. Give each room (cube) "wall paper". (Step 4 and beyond is not required, but are the main steps that customizes the organizer into a doll house.) Simply take your daughter to WalMart or another store that has a variety of inexpensive fabric, and let your daughter choose up to 9 different fabrics that will serve as the "wall paper".

Takeaways
  • I wanted my daughters to have a doll house that their Barbies would fit in.

My dad built my sisters and I a barbie doll house when we were little. He got carpet scraps from carpet dealers who had old carpet swatches and also reall wall paper from old wall paper books. It was a lot of fun! Just like a reall house.

We like your idea! On our way to Lowes. It will be a nice surprise for 5 yr. old granddaughter for Christmas. Thanks, Rhonda
