The demand for the Dalmatian exploded in the 1950's as a result of the novel, 101 Dalmatians. In 1996, this demand even widened with the release of the Disney movie. The Dalmatian is a breed of dog which is difficult to ignore as they are such an attractive dog and have the capability to draw much attention. Perhaps the Dalmatian is best known as a "fire house dog". This dates back to the day of the fire engines which were horse drawn.

When you decide a Dalmatian puppy is right for your family, be prepared to socialize the pup properly. If puppies are not socialized as they should be they can become aggressive. This aggressiveness is a result of a fear of people. In order to combat this tendency, the pup must be exposed to many different people on a regular basis.

Even though Dalmatians are a large breed they should be house dogs. If you do not wish a dog or a dog of this size in your home, a Dalmatian is not the breed for you. The Dalmatian is a "people dog" and needs to be a part of the family and live with them in the home. If a Dalmatian is left outside he may very well develop a barking problem as well as become a digger. While Dalmatians can go out side from time to time or for walking and exercise, the Dalmatian has a coat which is not suitable for cold weather.

While most breeds of dogs shed, Dalmatians shed on what would seem like a continuous basis, and their hair is difficult to lift from the furniture and carpets. By brushing your Dalmatian daily, shedding on the furniture will be kept at a minimum. The fully grown male Dalmatian stands around 23" tall, and weighs around 60 pounds. The female Dalmatian, as a general rule will be a bit smaller than their male counterpart. The coat of the Dalmatian is short and white with the distinguishing spots of black or brown adding great contrast to the coat. The size of the individual spots on the coat of the Dalmatian very. The Dalmatian was bred for staying power and has a muscular build with a large chest.
