Some items that you would normally think of as meatless or devoid of animal byproducts are really hat they seem. For instance, there are many wines that are filtered through egg whites and other animal products. White refined sugar in some cases is filtered through bone char, the burned bones of animals. Everyday gelatin is made from animal products and can be found in quite a few yogurts.

How can someone who is intent on living the vegan lifestyle avoid the hidden animal products? By being alert and a very educated consumer. Most vegans already read the labels on all of the products purchased for their consumption and use. Many who have been living the began lifestyle for quite a while probably know more than what I can tell you in this article. But if you are new to veganism, be sure to understand labels and additives.

As I stated earlier, many wines are not vegan. These wines have been contaminated, in the eyes of vegansand vegitarians, by animal byproducts. There are vegetarian and vegan safe wines out there, you just need to know where to look. Here is a short list, though there are many others safe for non meat-eater use.

Marks and Spencer. Most of their wines are vegetarian safe, with many vegan friendly as well.

Hardys Bin 7 Leasingham Riesling. You may need to ask per year.

Brown Brothers Again, a majority of the wines are vegan friendly, though it is best to ask per year.

Sugar has been the center of debate with vegans on each side of the field for a long time. The culprit in deciding vegan friendly sugar is the filtering system. Some companies use charcoal filters to remove the color from the sugar. The charcoal in the filters is called bone char, which is made from burned cattle bones. The following companies do not use char filters, but other filtering processes to make sure their products are vegan/vegatarian friendly. (Keep in mind that brown sugar is made by adding molasses to refined sugar and may not be vegan.)

Luckily I gave up alcohol years before I became a vegan, so that's one less thing to worry about. I'd like to mention that one animal ingredient that sneaks into a lot of foods which would otherwise be vegan is whey, so, as you say, read labels. My POV, as a vegan of about 7 years, is that you shouldn't turn it into a fundamentalist religion, but do the very best you can, because it's literally impossible to be 100% vegan in this world, and anyway, the very best is a heck of a lot better than what the average dead animal consumer eats.

I'm not a vegan but this is a great article for those who are. Worchestershire sauce is another food with "hidden" animal products!
